Carp Carp and more Carp

I will start by saying whoops I have forgotten to keep up too date with the Blog as time has flown by and with business going well I kept putting my right up off!

With the terrible summer we have struggled with some species as they have just not quite grown enough and we ended up with several thousand 5 and three quater inch Tench, not good as we usually sell alot of 6 inch plus fish!!  The same can be said for the bream with lots falling a quater of an inch shy of the hoped size, but never mind they will keep for next year and then be that much bigger! With the late mild weather we have not been able to sell any of the bream as water temperatures have been over 12 or close too it and this is a big no no when handling skimmers. With the help of the Sparsholt lads headed by Viv Shears we were able to harvest the 2 acre lagoon at the site down the road and removed some 700 Carp up too 8lb all in fantastic condition and nice and fat. Some of these are destined for CEMEX anglings lakes up near London so look out for them. The boys did a great job and there enthusiasm was just awesome with more mud on the lads then in the lake!

Over the last couple of years there is deffinatly been a turn in demand for bigger carp and finnaly I think people are prepared to watch there fish grow from singles/low doubles up too the bigger sizes rather than buying dodgy big fish from the unkwnown source. As I have written about in my Carpology articles and many others have preached patients is the way forward and watching your young fish grow and prosper in there new home is so rewarding.

On the line of Carp our Crucians have done well considering the cold summer and with plenty of 6inch plus ones for sale I have been busy grading these in readyness for a hectic spring. Although a bit of a shy fish they create some tremendous sportand having spoken to a customer from last year he ravved about the sport his anglers were recieving from there crucian lake and what a nice change it made to have a net full of gold sovereigns rather than just carp!

The sun is shinnig and its another afternoon of grading

Indian Summer

Here we are in September and glorious sunshine with warm days but cool nights, this is just what we needed with these warm days pushing the fish to add an extra bit of weight or length.

With a few early big orders allready out the door in the shape of 1lb carp we are looking at a busy pre christmas with our regular custmers placing orders for bigger tench, crucians and the usual carp weights.

Let the selling commence

Well its been a bit hit or miss so far with the weather with brief spells of heat and sunny days but then many days of cloudy cooler and of course rainy conditions!

Life on the farm has been busy as normal with lots of feeding our young fish and keeping the weed at bay, although with the poor weather this has not beemn such a problem. All our young Carp, Tench, Bream, Crucians and the Rudd are all doing wel although some are a little behind but plenty of time to catch up. The general vibe in the trade seems very positive with sales already looking good for the coming season. Our new price list is up on the web now so do have a look.

Due to the nature of our site, this year has seen a lot of trees being felled to allow more light and wind onto the stock ponds this in turn will help with production and with the added breeze on the water enable a nice turn over of the water body. What a difference this has made with lots of light being let in on some of the ponds on the lower half of the site.

Just down the road our new site is coming on well with the 4 one acre ponds nearing completion and fish already in one, this will take our number of ponds up too 54 and with this new site we will be able to supply those extra sizes of fish for the re-stocking market, all we have to do is look afterthem all and deliver the fish!

With 1lb fish going out at the end of the week my job today will be getting all the transportation kit up and ready with new oxygen bottles being loaded onto the trailer, we are looking fo a good pre winter sales this year with lots of quality 1-3lb carp for sale I am sure we will be kept very busy.

We have had good success with our Tench and looking into the fry ponds we are regularly seeing large numbers swimming under the feeders all they need to do now is grow!

Coat and hat time as its rainnig again!
